The index will allow the public to search for individuals on a variety of genealogy criteria if the information has been in the file for at least 50 years. I Found the Person I Was Looking For, What Now?[edit | edit source]

  • Add any new information to your records
  • Search for an obituary
  • Search for a cemetery records
  • Use the name and age to search census records
  • Search for a probate record
  • Continue to search the index and records to identify children, siblings, parents, and other relatives who may have served in the same unit or a nearby unit
  • When looking for a person who had a common name, look at all the entries for the name before deciding which is correct
  • You may need to compare the information of more than one family or person to make this determination
  • Be aware that, as with any index, transcription errors may occur

I Can't Find the Person I'm Looking For, What Now?[edit | edit source]

  • Look for variant spellings of the names. You should also look for nicknames and abbreviated names
  • Search the indexes and records of nearby localities
  • Consult the New York Record Finder to find other records
