-This article describes Images of selected Confederate Slave Payrolls, 1874-1899 [https://catalog.archives.gov/id/719477 NAID 719477] consisting of 5,971 file units from Record Group 109 War Department Collection of Confederate Records. The collection consists of payrolls for enslaved labor on Confederate military defenses during the Civil War. The payrolls were created by the Confederate Quartermaster Department. Most payrolls are for the state of Virginia. The records will include the enslaved name, place worked and the slave owner's name.
