Historical Background[edit | edit source]

Though village records exist, few birth and death records are created. Polygamy and polyandry are legal in Bhutan, however only the first wife or first husband has legal status. Polyandry and polygamy are dying out.[2] Arranged marriages are still common in rural areas.[3]

Coverage and Compliance[edit | edit source]

Birth records are not created, and death records are not issued. Some may be in village records. Marriage records may be registered at a local civil office.[4]
