Audio, Video Cassette Tape, and Movie Film Conversion (Movie 8 and Super 8 reel-to-reel films)

The Payson FamilySearch Center has equipment for you to use to convert audio, video tapes, and movie film to digital formats. Please click on the "GET STATION INFO - RESERVE" links to the right to learn about each station we have available.

Hardware and Equipment[edit | edit source]


2 Kodak PS-40/80 Photo Scanner with 1 Flat Bed (1000 pictures scanned in one hour)!
1 audio cassette digitizer
2 slide/negative scanners
2 VHS to DVD converters (from any tape format)
2 Book Scanners (must be operated by consultants only, but they will be happy to scan your book for you)

Audio Cassette and Reel-to-Reel Audio Digitizers


Audio Cassette Digitizer
This unit converts audio cassette tapes to a variety of digital formats. This is done in real time -- 30 minutes of audio will take 30 minutes to capture. The digital files are stored directly onto a USB drive. While monitoring the audio with headphones during the session, family history work can be completed on a computer.

Reel-to-Reel Audio Digitizer * NEW *
This unit converts old reel-to-reel audio tapes to an MP3 digital file. This is done in real time -- 30 minutes of audio will take 30 minutes to capture. The digital files are stored directly onto a USB drive. While monitoring the audio with headphones during the session, family history work can be completed on a computer. We book these appointments for four hours. However, you are not required to use the entire time.

This equipment is only available on Tuesday from 5:00 to 9:00 PM, Wednesday from 1:00 to 9:00 PM, Thursday from 5:00 to 9:00 PM and Friday from 1:00 to 5:00 PM.

Video Tape Conversion Stations


Equipment is provided to capture, in real-time, video from VHS, Compact VHS (VHS-C), 8mm, Hi8, 8mm movies, and MiniDV cassette tapes. The captured video files will be in MP4 format and will be transferred to the guest's personal USB drive to take home. A two-hour video will need about 4G of USB storage. Guests can bring their own video camera and cables for maximum compatibility.

Other video tape formats can also be captured with the guest's video camera/player and the cables to connect to a TV set (yellow, red, and white RCA cables or S-Video cable).

The video tape can be split into smaller topic-based files during the conversion - birthday party, vacation, graduation, etc. The result is small subject-based videos that can be uploaded to Social Media (Facebook), loaded on a phone, or easily shared with family & friends.

There are three different types of video conversion equipment you can reserve:

Preparing to Use the Video Conversion Equipment

For a successful experience, consider the following:
  • Rewind tapes or set at start point before coming, if possible, to maximize time
  • Expect about two hours and 15 minutes of video content during a session with 15 minutes at the end to save video files
  • Bring an external USB drive with at least 16G or more of available space for a single session. (3.0 USB drive is strongly recommended)
  • MP4 video files will be the result of the conversion. DVD is possible if desired but not typical
  • Do not bring tapes with commercial content or copyrighted material, only family-related videos

The conversion equipment is to be used only with the assistance of a trained technology missionary.


Movie Film Conversion (Movie 8 and Super 8 reel-to-reel films)

This unit converts old 8mm movie films to a digital file. This is done in real time. The captured files will be in MP4 format and will be transferred to the guest's personal USB drive to take home. You will monitor the conversion on a computer. It takes seven minutes to convert one minute of film. For example - it will take fifty-six minute to convert an eight-minute film. We have two machines. Bring multiple movies to convert at the same time.
