Historical Background[edit | edit source]

Saint Kitts had Carib indigenous people for thousands of years. Europeans began arriving in the 1600s. Spanish, French and British settled there. African slaves were soon brought to work the plantations. [1]

The Islands of St. Christopher (now known as St. Kitts) and Nevis, which formed part of the Leeward Islands Federation from 1871 to 1956, and part of the Federation of the West Indies from 1958 to 1962, gained "association" status with Great Britain in 1967 and became fully independent in 1983. Saint Kitts and Nevis is part of the British Commonwealth.

Coverage and Compliance[edit | edit source]

Birth and death registration began 1 January 1859.[2] The National Archives St. Kitts and Nevis have birth and marriage records 1859 to 1930. Registration of marriages started in 1881. The Archives also have marriage bonds.[3]

The Registrar General of Nevis is the sole repository for Nevis of birth, death, marriage and fetal death records.[4]
