The 28th Kentucky Infantry was organized in the fall of 1861 at New haven, Kentucky, under Col. Wm. P. Boone, and was mustered into the United States service October 8th, 1861, at New Haven, Kentucky. This regiment was raised under the call of the State for 40,000 volunteers for United States service. Colonel Boon was much exposed during the winter of 1864, while commanding cavalry and mounted infantry at Chattanooga, Tennessee and was reluctantly compelled to resign on account of disability by exposure, on June 28, 1864.
