The Panama Canal Museum is located in a beautifully restored building that was once the office space of the French Canal Company, the U.S. Isthmian Canal Commission offices and then, in 1912, the main Post Office. It is full of artifacts and information. The Interoceanic Canal Museum of Panama is a permanent, non-profit institution, at the service of society and its development, open to the public; that acquires, preserves, investigates, interprets, disseminates and exposes the testimonies of the history of Panama and its Canal, for education, knowledge and the delight of the public that visits it.

The collections that make up the Museum of History of Panama, are grouped following the accrual of the History of the country, generally established by the common of the national historians and officialized in the textbooks approved by the Ministry of Education as follows: 1st Colonial Period, from 1501 to 1821. 2nd Departmental Period, from 1821 to 1903. 3rd Republican Period, from 1903 to the present. Having chosen the facts and monuments that have had the greatest impact on the life of the country in order that the visitor can get an idea of ​​the importance and the events summits of each historical period and the participation of the different human groups that make up the Panamanian nationality in them; including national and foreign ethnic minorities.

Under renovation at the time of research, the handsome, two-story Royal Customs House of Portobelo was originally built in 1638 to serve as the contaduría (counting house) for the king’s gold. Now the two main rooms house permanent exhibitions, including replicas of Spanish-colonial rifles, sketches of Portobelo’s forts, 20th-century black-and-white photos of the town and a few dozen rusty cannonballs.
