Historical references dating from the mid-19th century allow us to identify traces of the foundation of the municipality of Ananindeua. These features are related to the establishment of a stop and/or station of the Estrada de Ferro de Bragança, in the territorial area, in the place where its municipal headquarters is located today.
Originally, Ananindeua belonged to the circumscription of Belém. From the location of the railway station, its settlement began to acquire dynamism, being recognized as a parish, and later, as a district of the capital of Pará.
In the historical sources consulted, it was not possible to find the ecclesiastical instruments of its elevation to the category of parish, nor the legal instruments of its consideration as a District.
It is known, however, that in 1938, by an act of the State Government, it came to be considered as a district headquarters, belonging to the municipality of Santa Isabel do Pará, returning to the territorial heritage of Belém. By State Decree-law nº 4.505, of December 30, 1943, promulgated by the Federal Interventor, Magalhães Barata, the municipality of Ananindeua was created, and its installation, as such, took place on January 3, 1944.
To direct the new municipality, Claudemiro Belém de Nazaré took over the prefecture. In October 1945, with the fall of the dictatorial regime, he was appointed Mayor of Ananindeua Fausto Augusto Batalha. Its municipal seat was recognized as a city on December 31, 1947, with the approval of Law No. 62, which was published in the Official State Gazette, on January 18, 1948.[10]
Between 1947 and 1956, the municipality of Ananindeua had the following districts: Ananindeua (Centre), Benevides, Benfica and Engenho do Arari. In 1961, pursuant to Law nº 2.460, of December 29, with the areas of its districts (Engenho Arari, Benfica and Benevides), the municipality of Benevides was constituted. Currently, the municipality of Ananindeua is made up of only the headquarters district.
