The current municipality of Afuá, located on the north-western extremity of Marajó Island, began around 1845, when Micaela Arcanja Ferreira settled there, occupying a land possession, which she named Santo Antônio. Because it was the appropriate location for a port and transit stop for the Amazon estuary, in 1869, there already existed around the site, a population nucleus made up of several shacks. In 1870, Micaela donated land for the formation of the chapel, which runs from the border stream on the Marajó River, down the Afuá River, to the Jaranduba Igarapé, on the Cajuuna River. With this initiative, Mariano Cândido de Almeida, together with other local residents, began the construction of the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição do Afuá, completing it in 1871. Due to the ease of acquiring land plots, the village then formed soon developed and became a parish in 1874, which was extinguished twice, until, in 1889, it regained its condition. With the republic, in 1890, Afuá obtained the category of village and municipality, whose installation took place in the same year. The inhabitants of the municipality are called “Afuaenses”.<br>
