'''Flurkarten (land register maps)''' | |||
During agricultural reforms (Verkoppelung) around the turn of the 18th century maps were drawn up. They show parcels of land by numbers but also who owned them. The reforms were carried out because the agricultural areas were no longer to be used by villagers on a cooperative basis but were now to become private property. The various maps make the distribution of land traceable. Some maps show the land before and after Verkoppelung.
The land register maps are useful when other archival records can be consulted, such as cadastral protocols orErdbücher (books which contain the entire area belonging to a parish or manorial estate and list crop rotations, live stock, houses and their state of repair as well as dues and obligations of local inhabitants). All such documents give clarification of proceedings which could have lasted decades and in which people had their say, as well.
The substantial collection of land register maps housed in the Landesarchiv Schleswig-Holstein, Abteilung 402 can be accessed in the Reading Room of the archive. It is also possible to order digital images of maps. See their website http://www.schleswig-holstein.de/LA/DE/LA_node.html features under “Services” contact addresses (Ansprechpartner).

| |||
