This is the largest public library in China and one of the ten largest in the world. There is seating for 3,000 library visitors. The library opened a genealogy reading room in 1996. It provides access to more than 18,000 genealogical charts.

In April 2012 Genealogical Society of Utah (FamilySearch) reached an agreement with the Shanghai Library to establish a Chinese Genealogical Centre.

The Shanghai Library is building a genealogical database of nearly 50,000 jiapu (Chinese clan lineage books). Some of the books contain Chinese clan histories and family trees extending back for more than 1,000 years. The project started in 2001 in an effort to help with an increased number of queries about family history. Completion of the database is planned for the end of 2007.
