The Ogden FamilySearch Center Offers Many Scanning Opportunities
We are excited to help you preserve your family documents and pictures. The following tips will help make your experience successful.
Make an appointment prior to coming. We appreciate you being on time.
- Appointment times are for 1 ½ hour.
- Bring a 16 GB (or greater) USB or your DVD(s) with you.
- A missionary will greet you in the scanning area and assist you in getting started.
- Read through the different scanning equipment options below.
- Make your reservation by clicking on the "Blue Equipment Name Link."
- Review the copyright guidelines below.
FamilySearch has designated scanning and digitizing opportunities at our Center in order to preserve personal family histories. While using the scanning equipment, we ask that only family-owned documents, photos, videos, and movies be scanned, digitized or converted. Please do not scan, digitize or copy any material with commercial content or copyrighted material. Please review the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ policies on copyright.
“Copyright is protection given by law to the creators of original works of authorship that are expressed in a tangible form, including:
Literary, musical, dramatic, and choreographic works.
Works of art, photography, and sculpture.
Audio and audiovisual works (such as movies and videos, CDs, and DVDs).
Computer programs or games.
Internet and other databases.
Church members should strictly observe all copyright laws. Generally, only copyright owners may authorize duplication (copying), distribution, public performance, public display, or derivatives of their work. Equipment Opportunities and Preparation

Please make an appointment for the appropriate scanning/conversion equipment you wish to use. We encourage you to be on time. If you are 15 minutes late, it's possible you will have to reschedule another appointment. Below are the descriptions, capabilities and suggested preparation for the scanning equipment we offer. Please bring your own DVD's and USB thumb drives. A USB should have at least 16 GB to copy and save your photos, documents, VHS tapes. Please read carefully the descriptions and specific suggestions for each piece of equipment.

Slide Scanning
|
The SlideSnap X1 will automatically capture up to 20 film slides per minute. It is simple to operate with an interactive control panel. No babysitting. It is automated and stops at the end of a tray or in the event of a jam.
Appointment times are for 1 ½ hour.

Scanners for Documents, Photographs and Book Pages
|
The PS80 Batch Scanner and Flatbed Scanner are two options that can accommodate photos and documents up to 14” x 17”. The PS80 Batch Scanner feeds and scans up to 25 photos per minute. The Flatbed Scanner is the best option for documents or photos that have been in plastic covers or are aged and fragile. Reserving the Batch Scanner and Flatbed Scanner options allows you to use either type of scanner.

Lexmark Scanner, Printer and Copier
|
This copier/Scanner/Printer will scan and convert several documents to pdf. It will save documents to your USB thumb drive. You can also print from a USB thumb drive to the printer. It is able to digitize individual documents to your Memories gallery on FamilySearch.org. It will print on standard (8 ½”x 11”) or legal size (8 ½” x 14”) paper. No reservation required, first come first serve.

Sony Hi8 Camcorder
|
This camcorder uses a Hi8 cassette. The camera uses the Powerdirector software, which is the same software used by the VHS and DVD recorders. This analog camcorder provides 440 lines of resolution and includes image stabilization. It also functions as a still-photo camera and offers digital zoom up to 360x. Additional features include NightShot, infrared recording, multiple language selections, and LaserLink connection. Default recording formats for this camcorder include Hi8 and Video8. An optical sensor resolution of 333, 000 pixels promotes clear image quality for both still photos and video recordings.
Appointment times are for 1 ½ hour.

Video Tape Conversion
|
This conversion equipment will capture video and store it to a 16 GB thumb drive. In order to have a successful session, here are some things to consider:
- For full-size VHS tapes, rewind the tapes or set at starting point before coming.
- Reservations are for 1 ½ hour. Please plan to complete all of your setup, taping, and wrap-up in that time frame.
- The captured video file will be in .mpg or .mp4 format and will be transferred to your personal USB thumb drive. A two-hour video will need about 16GB of USB storage in .mpg and .mp4 formats.
- The video tape can be split into smaller subject-based segments during the conversion, resulting in small videos that can be uploaded and easily shared. If needed, a DVD can be crated during the conversion.
- Please bring blank DVD+R or DVD-R discs. Recommended brands are Verbatim DVR+R or DVD-R 8x; Maxwell DVD+R 4x/8x/16x; Sony DVD+R 4x/8x/16x; TDX DVD +R 4x/8x/16x.
- You’ll need one DVD for every two hours of VHS video.

Kodak Multi-Media Scanner
|
This scanner coverts 35mm, 126, 110 negatives and slide into .jpg digital files. It will also capture still-shot images from 8mm film reels.
No reservation required, work sessions are for 1 ½ hours.

Movie Maker Pro
|
8mm and Super 8 Film to Digital
This is a Movie Maker scanner to digitize 8mm and Super 8 movies up to 9” reels. It digitizes frame by frame for high quality digital output. It is compatible with all Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems. It scans and saves digital movies into SD/SDHC cards 32 GB max. It converts 8 and Super 8 movies into MPEG-4 digital movie files at 1080P/20 fps.
- Please check your film. If the film is not in good condition such as dusty, broken, misaligned, taped overlap, bent, spliced, gluey or thick, please fix the film problems before coming.
- Please bring your personal USB thumb drive of at least 16 GB.

This audio device will play your cassette tape and convert it to a MP3 format. It will also save it to your personal USB thumb drive.
