Historical Background[edit | edit source]
The US Department of State Reciprocity Schedule provides the following information about birth certificates:
Births can be registered by either the father or the mother. If the child is born out of wedlock and is registered by the mother, the father is not specified and the child is registered with the surname of the mother. Extraits can be obtained from the National Archives ... . There may be a fee for this service. If no record exists or cannot be found, the National Archives can prepare an extrait stating that the birth record could not be located and including the text of a baptismal certificate. These negative extraits are considered unreliable as proof of relationship. There may be a fee for this service. (25 Aug. 2005)[1]

Accessing Hidden Records[edit | edit source]
To access these records:
- From the FamilySearch main page click the Search menu and select Catalog to open the Catalog main page.
- To open a search field, click either the Subjects link or the Keywords link. Make sure the Place field is blank.
- From one of the tables below, choose the comune, comunal section, or comunal place that you wish to research.
- In the Subjects or Keywords field, enter the name you chose in Step 3, followed by the word "Haiti."
- Click the Search button.
