The authorities in charge of registering births, marriages and deaths are:

  • Mayors of the communes
  • Sub-prefects
  • Administrators/mayors of arrondissements and urban communities

Birth Records[edit | edit source]

  • Date and place of birth
  • Name of child
  • Gender
  • Parents' names and ages
  • Parents" profession and residence
  • Where appropriate, those of the declarant or the witnesses

"If the day of birth cannot be specified by the declarant or the witnesses, a date of birth is fixed ex officio by the Civil Registrar or by the President of the People’s Court in the village-centre or district."[2]

  • Name of each spouse
  • Occupation of each spouse
  • Date and place of birth of each spouse
  • Residence of each spouse
  • For minors, consent or authorization must be given
  • Option of "monogamy or polygamy eventually subscribed by the spouses"
  • "Payment or not of a dowry under conditions of marriage"
  • Whether either spouse was divorced
  • Name, profession, and residence of the witnesses[2]

  • Date and place of death
  • Gender of the deceased
  • Name of the deceased
  • Date and place of birth of the deceased
  • Occupation of the deceased
  • Residence of the deceased
  • Name of the spouse if the deceased was married, widowed or divorced
  • Name and age of the informant
  • Occupation and residence of the informant
  • If applicable, the degree of relationship between the informant and the deceased[2]
