The Harold Weary Genealogy and Local History collection of the Mount Prospect Public Library is one of the Library’s special collections.  It was first developed as a separate collection in the 1970s by Harold Weary and other members of the Northwest Suburban Council of Genealogists and has continued to grow through the work of several dedicated librarians and volunteers and the support of the Library over the years.  This collection which is found in the center of the second floor of the library offers many resources for researching family history.  Most of the collection deals with Mount Prospect, the Northwest suburbs, the city of Chicago, and Illinois.  There are also resources for other states and countries and many genealogy how-to books.    Many of these books can be checked out while the rest are for use in the Library only.  Also available are genealogy periodicals as well as microform collections of local newspapers and census records. A digital microform reader is available for use in the genealogy room.  The Library has subscriptions to the genealogical online resources Ancestry Library Edition, Fold 3, Heritage Quest, and MyHeritage. These resources along with Newspaper Archive and the Historical Chicago Tribune are accessible at any public Internet computer in the Library. with Mount Prospect, the Northwest suburbs, the city of Chicago, and Illinois.
