The Genealogy & Local History Room was established in 1976 due to the efforts of Imogene Kennedy, our first Genealogy Librarian, and the Montgomery County Genealogical Society. Our collection has since grown to be one of the largest in the state of Texas. The collection includes books, yearbooks, records, maps, microfilm, as well as access to several genealogy and local history databases. The core of our collection focuses on Montgomery County Texas and the surrounding counties of East Texas, but has grown to include over 32,000 books that cover most of the United States, as well as many International Books. We also house over 14,000 rolls of microfilm and provide 3 digital microfilm readers for public use. Events are regularly held on various historical and genealogical topics. In 2017, a Preservation Pad was added to our department, which allows the user to digitize documents, photos, film, and other old media to a modern digital format. Equipment & Technology We offer the following equipment for public use: 3 public computers with access to several genealogy databases. A list of our genealogy databases can be found here Free public wifi. 3 Scanpro 2000 digital microfilm reader stations 1 copy machine & print station : capable of printing/copying on Letter (8.5 x 11), Legal (8.5 x 14), and Ledger (11 x 17) size pages. Copies and prints are 10-30 cents per page (depending of paper size and whether paying with cash or print card). 1 overhead book and document scanner to create copies. Please bring your own USB flashdrive to use this service. Preservation Pad Our Preservation Pad is a free service our library provides to help individuals convert their print, photographic, and analog media into a digital format, helping them preserve and share precious family memories and moments for generations to come. The Preservation Pad is set up into seven distinct stations with state of the art equipment to help in this process. Full details on the library's Preservation Pad can be found here. This service is offed on a first-come, first served bases, and reservations are highly recommended. Please call or email the Genealogy Department to make a reservation. Genealogy Programs and Workshops Information about upcoming genealogy programs and workshops may be found on website events page. Tips for Your Visit You'll have a more productive research session if you do a bit of "homework" before coming in. Talk to relatives and consult look at home sources for information on your family members. Record their names, dates and places you find out about them. Filling out a Ancestor Chart is a great way to compile this information. Bring with you a blank USB flash drive to save information you find online or scanned from books. This will help you save on printing costs.
