The Genealogy & Local History Room was established in 1976 due to the efforts of Imogene Kennedy, our first Genealogy Librarian, and the Montgomery County Genealogical Society. Our collection has since grown to be one of the largest in the state of Texas. The collection includes books, yearbooks, records, maps, microfilm, as well as access to several genealogy and local history databases. The core of our collection focuses on Montgomery County Texas and the surrounding counties of East Texas, but has grown to include over 32,000 books that cover most of the United States, as well as many International Books. We also house over 14,000 rolls of microfilm and provide 3 digital microfilm readers for public use. Events are regularly held on various historical and genealogical topics. In 2017, a Preservation Pad was added to our department, which allows the user to digitize documents, photos, film, and other old media to a modern digital format.
