The term genealogy is used in this outline to describe records that contain family information gathered by individuals, societies, or archives. These records may include pedigree charts, compiled family information, correspondence, ancestor lists, research exchange files, record abstracts, and collections of original or copied documents. These excellent sources of information can save you time.
Compiled and Published Secondary Sources[edit | edit source]
Compiled genealogies and published genealogies are secondary sources, not original or primary sources. As such, they are subject to human error through translation or transcription errors, mistaken interpretations, and opinion decisions of another researcher. You should make every effort to base your research on the actual, original records or their digitized images.
Collecting Previous Research by Others Wiki Series[edit | edit source]
Major Online Collections and Databases[edit | edit source]The Family History Library has several sources that contain previous research or that can lead you to other people who are interested in sharing family information. These sources include many ancestral lines that extend into Germany:
Microfilmed Collections[edit | edit source]Some of these collections are currently available on microfilm. However, FamilySearch is gradually digitizing all their microfilms, so check back frequently.
Deutsches Geschlechterbuch (German Lineage Book)[edit | edit source]The FamilySearch Library has many genealogical collections for German families, including published and unpublished collections of family histories and lineages and research files of prominent genealogists.
Ahnenstammkartei des deutschen Volkes (The German Pedigree Card Index)[edit | edit source]
Books and Periodicals[edit | edit source]
Town Genealogy Books (Ortssippenbücher)[edit | edit source]An Ortssippenbuch (town lineage book) or Ortsfamilienbuch (town family book) includes birth, marriage, and death data for all persons found in the local records during a specified time period, compiled into families. Sources may include the local parish registers, civil registration records, court and land records, and sometimes published material. In the printed book, this information is then arranged in a standardized format, usually alphabetically by surname and chronologically by marriage date. Family entries are identified by sequential numbers. Town genealogies are known by various names, including “town lineage book,” “local heritage book,” “one-place-studies,” “Ortssippenbuch (OSB),” and “Ortsfamilienbuch (OFB).” This article will use the term “town genealogy” and the abbreviation OFB when referring to compilations that include all or a large part of a town’s population.
Regional Collections[edit | edit source]Bayern[edit | edit source]The Family History Library has the following collection of records on forty microfilms: Regensburg (Bayern). Stadtarchiv. Genealogische Sammlung von Familiengeschlechtern Namenskartei, 800-1900 (Card index of genealogical collections, 800-1900). Salt Lake City, Utah, USA: Genealogical Society of Utah, 1986. (FHL films 1,337,855-94.) These records list births, marriages, deaths, professions, parents, spouses, and places of residence. The records are taken from city archives in Amberg, Augsburg, Nürnberg, Würzburg, and Regensburg. Family names are arranged phonetically.
Palatinate (Pfalz)[edit | edit source]The following sources list two alphabetical card indexes of births, marriages, and deaths from the Pfalz: Arbeitsgemeinschaft Pfälzisch-Rheinische Familienkunde. Pfälzische Ahnenkartei, 16.-20. Jahrhundert (Palatinate ancestor index, sixteenth to twentieth century). Salt Lake City, Utah, USA: Genealogical Society of Utah, 1979. (On 63 FHL films.)
