St George Family Search Center

The St George FamilySearch Center is now open at its new location on the NE corner of 6th South and 2nd East, a block from the temple.. In addition to research assistance and other services available at the previous library, the new facility is equipped with a Discovery Center. This provides several interactive experiences for all ages where they can learn about the times and places where their ancestors lived. The Discovery Center uses data previously stored in FamilySearch.

The major services provided at the center are listed below.

Discovery Experience

The Discovery Experience consists of several large screen interactive displays. Making a reservation is recommended but not required. For more information or to schedule a visit click here.

• ALL ABOUT ME - What's so special about my birth year? Discover what was happening in the world the day you were born.
• WHERE I COME FROM - How in the world did I get here? View the geographical origins of your ancestors on a map of the world.
• PICTURE MY STORY - How do I look in my ancestor's shoes? Superimpose a picture of you onto the cultural clothes of your ancestors.
• RECORD MY STORY - What are my favorite memories? Capture your memories in this state-of-the-art story studio. Group and individual booths are available.

Preparation for Visitors. To better improve your experience at the FamilySearch Discovery Center, it is suggested you create a FamilySearch account and add individuals to your Family Tree before you come. Learn about registering for an account here. Assistance with this process is available at the Center during a separate visit, on-line at FamilySearch.org, and from parents or church leaders. If you already have an account be sure to bring your account username and password when you visit the center.

Find, Take and Teach

Experienced staff members are available to show you how to find ancestors and other family members who need temple ordinances. Through this one-to-one experience they can help you resolve specific relationship problems and answer your questions. Ward and Stake Temple and Family History Consultants can receive training in how to help others.

Research Assistance

Volunteers specializing in many parts of the world can assist you with foreign languages and cultures. They can show you how to access geographical information in the FamilySearch Research Wiki.

Many Premium genealogical and historical websites are available. In addition to the databases on FamilySearch and their Partner’s sites (Ancestry.com, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and American Heritage) 12 other subscription sites are available at no cost. Computer Tools

Demonstrations and training using genealogical computer tools are available to automate many tasks associated with Family History. These include: Graphic Displays and Charts, Searching for Missing Ordinances, Attaching Sources, Descendancy, and Photos and Stories.

Family Area

The new center provides a comfortable work environment for parents. There is a story and play area for small children surrounded by computer work stations where parents can work on their family history without leaving their children unattended.

A break room is available with a refrigerator and microwave oven.

Indexing

Training for Multi-Lingual Indexing is held Thursday nights at 6:00 pm. Hispanic Indexing and Research sessions are held Saturdays at 11:00 am. These sessions are open to everyone – no reservation or prior experience is required.

Photo Scanning Equipment

Flatbed Scanner. Excellent for books, documents, certificates, and items with thick bindings.

Picture Scanner. Uses a feed tray which allows items to be scanned much faster than on the flatbed.

Wolverine Slide Scanner. Scans individual slides one-by-one or automatically from a magazine of up to fifty slides.

The Lexmark Scanner. Converts multiple page documents into a pdf file and stores it on a flash drive. This is ideal for preserving and sharing typewritten family histories.

Microfilm

The center does NOT have microfilm readers. FamilySearch is converting microfilm documents to computer image format. Check the FamilySearch Catalog for the status of documents of interest. The Bloomington Utah Family History Center located in Sun River has microfilm capability.
