The Seychelles Islands were first colonized by the French in 1768 in order to establish plantations of spices to compete with the Dutch monopoly. They were captured by the English in 1794 and incorporated as a dependency of Mauritius in 1814. In November 1903 the Seychelles Archipelago became a separate colony. Internal self-government was achieved on 1 October 1975 and independence as a republic within the Commonwealth on 29 June 1976.[1]
