The British annexed Walvis Bay in 1878 and incorporated it in the Cape of Good Hope in 1884. In 1884 South West Africa was declared a German protectorate. In 1915 the Union of South Africa occupied German South-West Africa at the request of the Allied powers. In 1920, the League of Nations made South West Africa a mandate to the Union of South Africa. In 1968, the United Nations changed the name of the territory to Namibia and withdrew the mandate. The Republic of South Africa maintained control of the country until 21 March 1990 when the area became an independent country.[1]
