The Payson Family History Center is located in the "Old Seminary building" kitty corner from the town swimming complex. People of all ages-young and old- are invited to learn how to find your roots or discover your family history. Knowledgeable consultants are here to guide and answer questions. Our services are provided free to the public. A nominal fee is charged for copies.

Payson Family History Discovery Day-September 17, 2016

Presenters:
1) Leland Moon: Family Tree Training with apps
Leland Moon became interested in genealogy when he was 12 years old and has been an avid genealogist ever since. He taught Physical Sciences and computer skills in the public schools for 30 years. While a student at BYU, and after graduation, he was a volunteer at the BYU Library and was involved in coordinating Sunday workshops and doing consultant training. He has taken many semester hours of genealogy classes at BYU and other locations. He has served for 11 years as a church service missionary at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, and has served many years in the local family history center. One of his chief responsibilities is developing curriculum for Family Tree. Go to "FamilySearch.Org", then to "Get Help", then "Learning Center", then to "Family Tree Training Lessons and Videos" and then to "View Lessons". Brother Moon created these family tree lessons-videos and sandbox.
2) Barbara Moon: Family Tree Training
Barbara Moon joined the church in her junior year in college. She taught elementary school in Utah and California. She became very interested in family history when she was called to work in a family history center in California and found her grandmother’s birthplace in Sweden through a dream. She has served as a church service missionary on the International floor of the Family History Library for 13 years. One of her mission responsibilities is to teach Family Tree to the missionaries. She loves doing original research, especially where her ancestors come from in the countries of Germany, Poland, Scandinavia, Scotland and Ireland. She just recently went to Ireland with her husband and found her ancestors’ records in the county of Armagh.
3) Robert Kehrer: FamilySearch
Robert Kehrer worked for 12 years as a molecular geneticist identifying disease genes by building very large family pedigrees. He has an MBA and worked for 7 years at Apple managing strategic alliances and driving market strategy in the sciences. For the last 9 years Robert has worked for FamilySearch as a product manager in the Family History Library, overseeing the public APIs, and managing the development of FamilySearch.org beta. He is currently the senior product manager of search technologies, including the search sytems, hinting, the Sourcelinker attach tool and the historical records image viewer. For years, (including 2016, he was a presenter at ROOTS TECH, Salt Lake City, Utah.
4) Larryn Brown: Principle Product Manager, Content Recognition, Ancestry.com Laryn joined Ancestry in 1998 as the first product manager, then went on to launch Ancestry.co.uk as the first international website with the Ancestry brand. Currently he is the product manager for emerging technologies in automated content recognition. Prior to his current assignment, Laryn worked as the head of international content partnership development, based in London. He also led the Content Operations team, the team that digitizes and indexes all of Ancestry’s historical records globally. Working in genealogy as a profession and a hobby, Laryn is actively involved in the genealogy community. The threads of his own genealogy include English bricklayers, Canadian and Mohican homesteaders, Southern colonists, and Norwegian farmers.
5) Brandon Baird: Latin American Specialist; Family Search- Historia Familiar en Español (specialty)
6) Van Celaya: Fast Accurate Research
Brother Van Celaya is a Church Service Missionary who teaches Family History consulting at Riverton Family Search Library, Brigham Young University FHC, Stake Conferences, Youth Conferences, Family History Conferences, FH fairs for multiple stakes, Stake Centers via the internet to as far away as Hawaii, Family History Centers, and even individual Family Home Evenings. Since last February 2014, he has trained over 10,300 people in classroom situations doing family history. Students have enthusiastically acknowledged "how fast and accurate people can become if they follow the things he teaches them.”
7) Bret Peterson: Searching for ancestors
Bret Petersen developed a love of family history research at a young age and it continued through his college years at Brigham Young University where he graduated with a degree in Journalism and a minor in Education.His interest in computers spurred him into professional training, support and management roles in various technology companies. He served as Past President of the Utah Genealogical Association. He is a graduate of the National Institute on Genealogical Research and has completed courses at the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy. As a member of the Genealogical Speakers Guild he has been a presenter and teacher for groups ranging from just a few to several hundred participants. He loves teaching and helping others learn all they can about using technology in researching their family history.

"Fast Accurate Research – FAST START". It is designed to help youth, Family history consultants, and leaders (especially priesthood leaders), to quickly get involved in helping others with Family History, TREK and especially temple work. Taught by Van Celaya
Let the Payson Family History Center help your Scouts receive their Genealogy Merit Badge. We have Merit Badge certified consultants to assist you. Call the Center to arrange for your group to come.
