The Basques are an ethnic group who live on the shores of the Bay of Biscay. The majority live in the Spanish state, but there are also Basque areas in France.
The Basque Country is known as Euskadi in Basque, Pays Basques in French and Pais Vasco in Spanish.
Basque[edit | edit source]
The Basque Language (Euskera) is arguably one of the oldest in Europe, and unlike the vast majority of other European languages is not part of the Indo-European family. In fact it is not known to be related to any other living language.

The French language can be found in many records in the French controlled part of the Basque country.
Spanish[edit | edit source]
The Spanish language (Castillian) can be found in many records in the Spanish controlled part of the Basque country.
Latin[edit | edit source]
The Latin language can be found in many older records in Basque areas, and was widely used in medieval times.
