Marlin was the Church Historian and Recorder for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and among many other things, was instrumental in getting the Joseph Smith Papers published and encouraging calling local historians so oral histories would be gathered from mission and area presidents when they were released which greatly increased the gathering of international Church histories.
