DAWLISH (St. Gregory), a '''parish''', in the union of Newton-Abbott, hundred of Exminster, Teignbridgeand S. divisions of Devon, 2¾ miles (N. N. E.) from Teignmouth. The church, a handsome and commodious structure in the later English style, with a square embattled tower crowned by pinnacles, was enlarged and beautified in 1824. At Sedwell and Cofton, hamlets in the parish, are the remains of ancient chapels; the latter has been disused only since the year 1715. There are places of worship for Wesleyans, Independents, and Plymouth Brethren. An old house near the churchyard, with walls of extraordinary thickness, is said to have been a monastery of some consideration. <ref>From: 'Datchworth - Dean, West', [[ http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=50915|''A Topographical Dictionary of England'']] (1848), pp. 15-23.
