In 1866 the independent Kingdom of Hannover was taken over by Prussia and became a Prussian province.
This province was divided into six regions:
1. Aurich
2. Hannover
3. Hildesheim
4. Lüneburg
5. Osnabrück
6. Stade

The capital city was Hannover.
Please note that the spelling is different in English from German.  In English, Hannover is spelled with one <n>; in German with two.
