The 1st Ohio Artillery Militia was organized before the Civil War began, under Colonel James Barnett. After serving three months in West Virginia, it was mustered for three years. Each battery has a separate history, since each served almost independently. This regiment was involved in&nbsp; nearly all of the great battles of the war.<ref>Stevens, Larry, comp.
