The template creates the link. I am wondering if the square brackets is causing the editor to think that a pipe needs to encoded. Why not just do a <nowiki>{{FHL|974 D22g}}</nowiki> which generates {{FHL|974 D22g}}? Want to try it? I see that the template allows for subject/title/keyword searches, but I don't see options for linking to places, last name, or author search. There are especially a lot of links out there to places.
