The 27th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry organized at Grayson Springs, Kentucky, under Col. C. D. Pennebaker, and was mustered into the United States service (627) strong on the 21st day of March, 1862. The 27th was assigned to the 3rd Brigade, 2nd division, 23 Army Corps. The 27th lost 180 men in battle. They mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky, March 29th 1865, the recruits being transferred to the 6th Kentucky Veteran cavalry.<ref>Kentucky.
