Archives and Libraries

• Archives collect and preserve original documents of organizations such as churches or governments. Libraries generally collect published sources such as books, maps, and microfilm.
• If you plan to visit a repository, contact them and ask for information about their collection, hours, services, and fees. Ask if they require you to have a reader’s ticket (a paper indicating you are a responsible researcher) to view the records, and ask how to obtain one.
• Although the records you need may be in an archive or library, the Family History Library may have microfilmed and/or digitized copies of them.

• Prior to the beginning of the 20th century, very little archival material created in the territories of Kosovo was preserved. The various rulers have not undertaken measures for the protection, collection, and preservation of written documents. This has caused, to a large extent, the archival material originating from this region to be destroyed or taken abroad.
• The State Agency of Archives of Kosovo is carrying out the work with maximum dedication in the service of its mission of preserving archival material, systematizing and handling it, making it ready for all researchers and interested parties to use archival documents.
• The archival service can provide the coming generations with the truth about the past, if approached professionally and completely independently, because no one has the right to destroy the historical memory or its traces.
• This institution today offers archival services, in addition to the central archives, in six regional centers of Kosovo.
