| The census is the mainstay for American Genealogy. It puts each family in a location every ten years, from 1790-1950. Location by county and state is important as it leads the researcher to other records. The county is the basic record holding unit for land and tax records, wills, and probate records, court records, plus others. All these records may provide clues to further your research.
