The first census in Benin was taken in 1893, the year after it became a French possession. Information that may be found in the census includes:
- Individual names
- Relationships
- Number of households for each village
- Unmarried mature males
- Widows who are heads of households
- Brief physical descriptions
- Estimates of the value of crop yields and income from livestock
- Military service
Records are housed at the National archives in Porto Novo. There is not sufficient information to make an accurate measure of overall population coverage.
