The first census in Benin was taken in 1893, the year after it became a French possession. Information that may be found in the census includes:

Individual names
Relationships
Number of households for each village
Unmarried mature males
Widows who are heads of households
Brief physical descriptions
Estimates of the value of crop yields and income from livestock
Military service
