Timor-Leste Emigration and Immigration[edit | edit source]
"Emigration" means moving out of a country. "Immigration" means moving into a country.
Emigration and immigration sources list the names of people leaving (emigrating) or arriving (immigrating) in the country. These sources may be passenger lists, permissions to emigrate, or records of passports issued. The information in these records may include the emigrants’ names, ages, occupations, destinations, and places of origin or birthplaces. Sometimes they also show family groups.
Immigration into Timor-Leste[edit | edit source]
- East Timor was colonized by Portugal in the 16th century and was known as Portuguese Timor until 28 November 1975. Nine days later, it was invaded and occupied by the Indonesian military; it was declared Indonesia's 27th province the following year.
- In 1999, following the United Nations-sponsored act of self-determination, Indonesia relinquished control of the territory. As Timor-Leste, it became the first new sovereign state of the 21st century on 20 May 2002.[1]
