Historical Background[edit | edit source]

In 1903 the territory now comprising Burundi was incorporated into German East Africa. In 1919 it became part of the Belgian colony of Ruanda-Urundi. On 1 July 1962 this colony became two independent nations, Rwanda and Burundi.
