History[edit | edit source]

The first European settlements in Florida were in 1566 on Santa Catalina by the Spanish. A British settlement was founded at Fort King George (Darien) in 1721. In 1732, a charter was granted by the British Crown to create the colony of Georgia.[1]

Land Records[edit | edit source]

From 1732-1755, Georgia land records were part of a trusteeship where lands were given to males and their heirs. Land was distributed by headright and bounty grants after 1756.[3]

Church Records[edit | edit source]

Early churches in Georgia included Baptist, Methodist, Lutheran, Quaker, Anglican, Reformed, and Congregational congregations.[4] Church records can be helpful in finding christening, marriage, and burial records. For more information about what colonial church records are available, search in the specific county of research.
