Portuguese Colonization (1484-1975)[edit | edit source]
Angola (contains former Portuguese Congo, which was also called Cabinda or Kabinda, locally known as Tchiowa) was colonized by Portugal from 1484 to 1975. European settlers didn't begin establishing themselves in the interior of the region until the 1800s. Angola gained independence from Portugal in 1975.[1]
