The Genealogy and Local History Room was established in 1976 due to the efforts of Imogene Kennedy, first genealogy librarian, and the Montgomery County Genealogical Society. What began as a 100-volume collection in the balcony of the old library building has grown to a 5,000-square foot facility with over 30,000 items. Staff and volunteers have also created a Montgomery County Obituary Index database for those researching local families. Currently, the genealogy and local history collection is one of the largest in the state of Texas.
