You can search the index or view the images or both. To begin your search, it is helpful to know:
*The name of the individual
*The date of arrival or name of port

To begin your search it is helpful to know

*The name of your ancestor.
#Fill in the search boxes on the Collection Page with the information you have

#Click Search to show possible matches

Search by Name by visiting the Collection Page:<br>Fill in the requested information on the initial search page. This search will return a list of possible matches. Compare the information about those in the list to what you already know about your own ancestors to determine if this is the correct family or person. You may need to compare information about more than one person to find your ancestor.

# Select NARA Roll Number-Contents

Look at the images one by one. Again you will need to compare the information with what you already know about your ancestors to determine which one is your ancestor.
How Do I Analyze the Results?
Compare each result from your search with what you know to determine if there is a match. This may require viewing multiple records or images.

Be aware that with either search you may need to compare the information about more than one person to make this determination.

As you are searching it is helpful to know such information as your ancestor’s given name and surname, some identifying information such as residence and age, and family relationships. Remember that there may be more than one person in the records with the same name as your ancestor and that your ancestor may have used nicknames or different names at different times
For more tips about searching on-line collections see the on-line article Search Tips and Tricks.

*If your ancestor used an alias or a nickname, be sure to check for those alternate names.
*Even though these indexes are very accurate they may still contain inaccuracies, such as altered spellings, misinterpretations, and optical character recognition errors if the information was scanned.

*Use the information to find other records such as emigrations, port records, and ship’s manifests.
When you have located your ancestor’s record, carefully evaluate each piece of information given. These pieces of information may give you new biographical details and lead you to other records about your ancestors. Add this new information to your records of each family. For example, you can use these lists to:
*Look for the Declaration of Intent soon after the immigrant arrived, and then look for the Naturalization Petition five years later, when the residency requirement would have been met. Look for naturalization records in federal courts and then in state, county, or city courts. An individual may have filed the first and final papers in different courts and sometimes in a different state if the person moved. Immigrants who were younger than 18 when they arrived did not need to file a Declaration of Intent as part of the process.

*Learn an immigrant’s place of origin
*Confirm their date of arrival
*Learn foreign and “Americanized” names
*Learn foreign and “Americanized” names
*Find records in his or her country of origin such as emigrations, port records, or ship’s manifests.
*Learn the place of origin and find church and vital records such as birth, baptism, marriage, and death records.  Also search for military, land and probate records.
*Find federal immigration records
*Use the information to find additional family members in censuses.
*Repeat this process with additional family members found, to find more generations of the family.
* Church Records often were kept years before government records were required and are a good source for finding ancestors before 1900.

Tips to Keep in Mind
I Can’t Find Who I’m Looking for, What Now?
*Try viewing the original record. Indexes and transcriptions may not include all the data found in the original records. Remember that there may be more than one person in the records with the same name.
*If your ancestor does not have a common name, collect entries for every person who has the same surname. This list can help you identify possible relatives that can be verified by records.
*If you cannot locate your ancestor in the locality in which you believe they lived, then try searching records of a nearby locality in an area search.
*Try variant spellings of your ancestor’s name.
*Remember that sometimes individuals went by nicknames or alternated between using first and middle names. Try searching for these names as well.
*Search the indexes and records of Maryland, United States Genealogy.
*Search in the FamilySearch Library Catalog

*Download a copy of the record or transcribe the details.
*If your ancestor had a common name, be sure to look at all the entries for a name before you decide which is correct.
*Continue to search the lists to identify siblings, parents, and other relatives who may have immigrated at the same time.
*If your ancestor has an uncommon surname, you may want to obtain the passenger list of every person who shares your ancestor’s surname. You may not know how or if they are related, but the information could lead you to more information about your own ancestors.
*If you do not find the name you are looking for check for variant spellings of their names.
*Please note that when you select an image to view, sometimes the manifest includes more than one page, and when you use the "click to enlarge manifest" link, the image that appears is not always the first page of the record. You may need to click on the "previous" or "next" links to view the remaining pages of the full manifest. .
I Can't Find Who I'm Looking for, What Now?
*Look for variant spellings of the names. You should also look for nicknames and abbreviated names.
*Search the indexes and records of other localities.
*Try alternative search methods such as only filling in the surname search box (or the given name search box) on the landing page leaving the other box empty and then click on search. This should return a list of everyone with that particular name. You could then browse the list for individuals that may be your ancestor.<br><br>
