An excellent example of a "Bürgerbüch" is a book entited Das Bürgerbuch Der Reichsstadt Esslingen 1482-1552.  This is a wonderful source to help you go farther back then the beginning of the earliest Church record.  The earliest filmed church book for Esslingen is for the Evangelical Lutheran parish for which the first record begins in the year 1565. The FHL call number is 943.47/Ec P49b.  There are also fragmented citizens' lists for the years 1470 and 1471.  This book contains the following information:
*Newly accepted citizens
*Date
*Family name, with multiple spelling versions
*Occupation
*Home village
*Lists of guildmasters, judges and councilman with years of service
