1. Go to the website:
*Births in Victoria from 1853 to 1914
[http://www.bdm.vic.gov.au/ State of Victoria Registry of Vital Records]
*Marriages in Victoria from 1853 to 1942
*Deaths in Victoria from 1853 to 1985
*Church baptisms, marriages and burials in Victoria from 1836 to 1853.


2. Then select Family History.
An online index can be searched for entries for these dates. Viewing search results costs a small fee.  Viewing scans of the actual record is allowed on payment of a larger fee.  


3. Click the "Start Search" button.
An image (uncertified record) can also be purchased and received over the internet, or a certified record can be purchased online and then mailed to you.  


4. Search the index for an ancestor
The [https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/index-search?action=getMarIdxSearchCriteria Marine Index] covers births, deaths and marriages on board ships coming to Victoria from 1853 to 1907, including ships' names.
 
If you wish to purchase a certificate you can do that online and print it in your home or office. They cost about $20 dollars and usually contain a lot of information after 1855.
