General Information Anzoátegui, is located in the northeastern region of the country and its territory it’s limited the states of Monagas and Sucre to the east, Bolívar to the south and Guárico to the west and limits the north with the Caribbean Sea. With the name of the great hero of independence, Jose Antonio Anzoátegui (1789-1819), this state has his own history. The capital is the city of Barcelona that was founded on 1677. It was founded on 1638 under the name of Nueva Barcelona del Cerro Santo, prevailing the name of Nueva Barcelona until beginnings of century XIX. At the end of the century XVII the present Anzoátegui state was built-in to the denominated Province of Cumaná, which by means of Real Certificate in 1777 conformed the Post of Capitania General of Venezuela along with the provinces of Guayana, Maracaibo, Caracas, Margarita and Trinidad. In 1810, a governmental meeting declares the separation of the cumanesa authority and conditionally accepts the government formed in Caracas. In the Constitution of 1864, the Barcelona state appears in quality of independent until the 1881 constitution, when the state of East conformed by the states Barcelona, Cumaná and Maturín is created; the Constitution of 1891 changes the name of the state to Bermúdez. Later, by agreement of the National Congress in 1899, the territorial division of 1881 is annulled and again arise the twenty states from the Venezuelan Federation. In 1909, the old Province of Barcelona aquires the political distribution of Anzoátegui state.
