A wonderful FamilySearch wiki article to start with is Beginners First Step. This is a long article, however there is a summary version at Beginners First Step - Summary and Links.

It is possible to learn about genealogy records, and tips on how to find ancestors, by reading articles and taking courses online. Only a few of the instruction and courses are listed below. More sites can be found by doing a Google search for genealogy courses online.
