We know from Lewis and Clarks journals that the Chippewa Indians were living in Oklahoma and Texas, well before 1805. Clark wrote about Estimate of the Eastern Indians while at Fort Mandan, during the winter of 1804-1805. Clark claimed the Chippewa's or the Chippaway, lived along the Headwaters of the Red River of the Mississippi River. Red River forms the boundary between Oklahoma and Texas. Chippaway's were living in the Texas panhandle region and also New Mexico and Arizona, well before 1805 also. Google Lewis and Clarks journals, or click this [http://lewisandclarkjournals.unl.edu/read/?_xmlsrc=1804-1805.winter.part2.xml&_xslsrc=LCstyles.xsl lewisandclarkjournals.unl.edu/read/] link. Just like any other civilization, precautionary steps were taken to limit intermarriages among immediate family members. The Navajo established family clans, with the maternal line being the predominate line. When introducing one self, a Navajo will provide their parent's clan and typically their maternal grandfather and paternal grandfather's clan, establishing their place in the world. Knowning one's clans is just as important as knowing the names of past ancestors and goes hand-in-hand with genealogical research.
