Genealogy researchers searching in Campeche county on the Municipal Archive to foster a closer understanding of the cultural history of the local people of Campeche. The archive is excellent because of its large pool of documents, not to mention the architectural footprint of the beautiful historic archive building.

In about 1685, many Campeche records were destroyed when the pirate Laurent Graff looted the city and the archives of Campeche. Many historical documents of the colonial period were lost.
In 1877 the Ayuntamiento secretary, Francisco Alvarez Suárez, began to rescue and organize the documents of the Ayuntamiento (local civil government) and of the state government. He worked for 26 years, from 1877 to 1903; during this time he was able to organize, inventory, and catalog the collection of documents. He also wrote 'Los Anales Históricos de Campeche', a record of the most important happenings of the city of Campeche from 1810 to 1910.
