Brief History

The 28th Kentucky Infantry was organized in the fall of 1861 at New haven, Kentucky, under Col. Wm. P. Colonel Boon was much exposed during the winter of 1864, while commanding cavalry and mounted infantry at Chattanooga, Tennessee and was reluctantly compelled to resign on account of disability by exposure, on June 28, 1864. The regiment veteranized on the 7th of May under Col. J. Rowan, Boone rejoined the army of the Cumberland in Georgia.[1]

Organized at Louisville and New Haven, Ky., October 10, 1861, to May 9, 1862. Mustered out December 14, 1865. [2]

Companies in this Regiment with the Counties of Origin

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.

Company A - Many men mustered in from Louisville, Jefferson County.
Company B - Many men mustered in from New Haven, Nelson County.
Company C - Many men mustered in from New Haven, Nelson County.
Company D - Many men mustered in from New Haven, Nelson County.
Company E - Many men mustered in from New Haven, Nelson County.
Company F - Many men mustered in from New Haven, Nelson County.
Company G - Many men mustered in from New Haven, Nelson County.
Company H - Many men mustered in from New Haven, Nelson County.
Company I - Many men mustered in from New Haven, Nelson County.

The records for this Regiment's Companies are from the book, Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Kentucky, Vol. 2-1861-1866. [3]

The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors database lists 1,452 men on its roster for this unit. Roster.
