Brief History
3rd (Williams') Infantry Battalion, formerly the 45th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry, was organized in July, 1864 with five companies. Surrendered on April 26, 1865. The field officers were Lieutenant Colonel John D. Williams and Major Elisha F. Nunn. [1]
Predecessor units:
45th Infantry Regiment was formed during the late summer of 1862 by redesignating Hardcastle's 33rd Mississippi Infantry Regiment. For a time it was consolidated with the 32nd Regiment. On July 14, 1864, it was consolidated into five companies and became known as the 3rd (Williams') Mississippi Infantry Battalion. Colonel Aaron B. Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.
