Tennessee Civil War Confederate Infantry Units

The information in this list of Tennessee Military Units comes from the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors web site (CWSS). This web site can also be searched by the name of a soldier.

Units 1st through 2nd[edit | edit source]

  • 1st Regiment, Tennessee Infantry (Turney's)
    Completed its organization at Winchester, Tennessee, in April, 1861. Of the 281 engaged at Gettysburg, more than sixty percent were killed, wounded, or missing.
    The regiment surrendered 8 officers and 30 men.
  • 2nd Regiment, Tennessee Infantry (Walker's)[also called the Irish Regiment]
    Was comprised of men from Memphis, Tennessee, and completed its organization at that city in May, 1861. The unit was later consolidated into four companies and merged into Smith's 5th Confederate Infantry Regiment.

Units 3rd through 5th[edit | edit source]

  • 3rd Consolidated Regiment, Tennessee Infantry
    It moved to Fort Donelson and in February, 1862, was captured. During this fight the unit had 88 men killed or wounded of the 750 engaged. After being exchanged it reorganized with 607 effectives. Later it was assigned to J.Gregg's, Brown's, Brown's and Reynolds' Consolidated, and Palmer's Brigade,
    Ended the war in North Carolina.
  • 3rd Regiment, Tennessee Mounted Infantry (Lillard's)
    Was organized in May, 1861, at Knoxville, Tennessee, and mustered into Confederate service in June at Lynchburg, Virginia.
    In April, 1865, it moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, and became part of President Davis' escort, until surrendering at Washington, Georgia, on May 9.
  • 5th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry
    Completed its organization at Paris, Henry County, Tennessee, in May, 1861. During December, 1862 consolidated with the 4th Tennessee Volunteers.
    Only a remnant surrendered on April 26, 1865.

Units 6th through 12th[edit | edit source]

  • 7th Battalion, Tennessee Cavalry (Bennett's)
    Was organized at Camp Jim Davis, Macon County, Tennessee, in November, 1861, with six companies.
    In June, 1862, it merged into Barteau's 2nd Tennessee Cavalry which later became 22nd (Barteau's) Tennessee Cavalry Regiment.
  • 7th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry
    Completed its organization at Camp Trousdale, Sumner County, Tennessee, in May, 1861.
    Engaged at Gettysburg, the unit surrendered 6 officers and 41 men.
  • 9th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry
    Was organized at Jackson, Tennessee, in May, 1861.
    At Chickamauga On April 26, 1865, the 9th Regiment surrendered about 40 men.
  • 10th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry
    Completed its organization at Fort Henry, Tennessee, in May, 1861.
    Of the 190 engaged at Chickamauga, sixty-eight percent were disabled, and in December, 1863, it totalled 80 men and 44 arms. Very few surrendered on April 26, 1865.
  • 11th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry
    Was organized at Camp Cheatham, Tennessee, in May, 1861.
    After the Atlanta Campaign the regiment was consolidated with the 29th Regiment and was included in the surrender on April 26, 1865

Units 13th through 22nd[edit | edit source]

  • 14th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry
    Was formed at Camp Duncan, near Clarksville, Tennessee, in May, 1861.
    Of the 220 engaged at Gettysburg, over fifty percent were disabled. The unit surrendered 6 officers and 34 men
  • 17th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry
    Was organized at Camp Trousdale, Sumner County, Tennessee, in June, 1861.
    At Chickamauga It surrendered 5 officers and 63 men on April 9, 1865.
  • 18th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry
    Completed its organization at Camp Trousdale, Tennessee, in June, 1861.
    December 21, 1864, there were 12 men fit for duty. It was included in the surrender on April 26, 1865.
  • 19th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry
    Was assembled at Knoxville, Tennessee, during May and June, 1861, and entered Confederate service at Cumberland Gap
    At Chattanooga,on April 26, 1865, it surrendered with 64 men
  • 21st Regiment, Tennessee Infantry
    Completed its organization at Union City, Tennessee, in July, 1861.
    During May, 1862, when the unit was reorganized, it was consolidated into six companies and united with the 5th (Smith's) Confederate Infantry Regiment

Units 23rd through 29th[edit | edit source]

  • 25th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry
    Completed its organization in August, 1861, at Camp Zollicoffer, in Overton County, Tennessee.
    On April 9, 1865, the 25th surrendered 4 officers and 21 men.
  • 27th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry
    [also called 25th Regiment],
    Was assembled at Camp Trenton, Tennessee, in September, 1861.
    At Chickamauga, only a remnant surrendered on April 26, 1865.
  • 29th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry
    Was assembled at Henderson's Mills, Greene County, Tennessee, in September, 1861.
    It had 71 disabled at Chickamauga and in December, 1863, totalled 236 men and 173 arms. Only a remnant surrendered in April, 1865.

Units 30th through 39th[edit | edit source]

  • 30th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry
    Completed its organization at Red Springs, Macon County, Tennessee, in October, 1861.
    The unit took 185 to Chickamauga and in December, 1863, totalled 106 men and 58 arms. Very few surrendered in April, 1865.
  • 31st Regiment, Tennessee Infantry (A. H. Bradford's)
    Was assembled in October, 1861, at Camp Trenton, Gibson Couty, Tennessee.
    Had 21 disabled at Missionary Ridge and in December, 1863, totalled 157 men and 137 arms. It was included in the surrender on April 26, 1865.
  • 32nd Regiment, Tennessee Infantry
    Was organized at Camp Trousdale, Sumner County, Tennessee, in October, 1861.
    At Chickamauga, It was included in the surrender on April 26, 1865.
  • 33rd Regiment, Tennessee Infantry
    Was formed in October, 1861, near Union City, Tennessee.
    Had 24 disabled at Missionary Ridge and totalled 124 men and 69 arms in December, 1863. It surrendered in April, 1865.
  • 36th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry
    Was formed at Knoxville, Tennessee, during February, 1862.
    In June it disbanded; some of its members were then transferred to the 35th, 43rd, and 63rd Tennessee Infantry Regiments.

Units 40th through 49th[edit | edit source]

  • 44th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry
    [Also called 5th East Tennessee Volunteer Regiment] was organized at Knoxville, Tennessee, during December, 1861.
    Ended the war at Washington, Georgia, in May, 1865, with a force of 123 men.
  • 46th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry
    Completed its organization at Paris, Tennessee, in November, 1861,
    After theBattle of Nashville,The regiment was included in the surrender on April 26, 1865.
  • 47th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry
    Completed its organization in December, 1861, at Camp Trenton, Gibson County, Tennessee. At Chickamauga only a remnant surrendered in April, 1865.
  • 48th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry
    was organized at Corinth, Mississippi, in April, 1862.
    This unit lost nineteen percent of the 312 engaged at Richmond and fifty percent of the 155 at Chickamauga.
  • 48th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry (Nixon's)
    Was organized at Corinth, Mississippi, in April, 1862.
    This unit lost nineteen percent of the 312 engaged at Richmond and fifty percent of the 155 at Chickamauga. In December, 1863, the 35th/48th (Nixon's) totalled 251 men and 207 arms.
  • 49th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry
    Organized in December, 1861, at Fort Donelson, Tennessee.
    The regiment lost seventy-one percent of the 129 engaged at Franklin and only a remnant ended the war in North Carolina.

Units 50th through 59th[edit | edit source]

  • 52nd Regiment, Tennessee Infantry
    Was organized in January, 1862, at Henderson Station, Tennessee,
    At Chickamauga and in December, 1863, totalled 213 men and 134 arms. Only a remnant surrendered on April 26, 1865.
  • 53rd Regiment, Tennessee Infantry
    Was organized at Fort Donelson, Tennessee, during January, 1862.
    Many were lost in the Atlanta Campaign and at Franklin and Nashville, and few surrendered on April 26, 1865.
  • 54th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry
    Was assembled at Nashville, Tennessee, in February, 1862.
    During April it was consolidated with the remnants of Voorhies' 48th Regiment to form Nixon's 48th Regiment.

Units 60th through 154th[edit | edit source]

  • 84th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry
    Was organized at McMinnville, Tennessee, in December, 1862,
    On March 8, 1863, the regiment was pronounced illegal by the War Department and lost its identity when united with the 28th Tennessee Infantry Regiment.
