Civil registration of births, marriages, and deaths began in 1900.[1]

Services provided by the Civil Registry to Ecuadorians:

  • Registry of judicial sentences (divorces, dissolution of the conjugal union), etc.
  • Identity cards for Ecuadorians and strangers

Coverage and Compliance

For children under 5 years of age, about 16% of children of African descent have not been registered. The national average is 9.9%.[2]

Information Recorded in the Records

Birth records:

  • Name of the civil parish
  • City, canton and province
  • Date of registration
  • Child's name
  • Address where the birth occurred
  • Date of birth
  • Information about parents includes:
    -names
    -ages
    -marriage status
    -nationality
    -residence
    -father's occupation and sometimes mother's occupation
  • Names of witnesses with ages and residences

Note: In Quito between 1935-1965, separate books were kept for child recognitions, legitimations, and adoptions. In other areas and in Quito between 1901-1934 and 1966 to the present, annotations were made in the margins of the birth registers for the procedures already noted.

  • Information of bride and groom includes:

    -Previous marriage status
    -Origen
