Historical Background[edit | edit source]
For centuries Trinidad was inhabited by native Amerindian peoples. The island of Tobago changed hands among Spanish, British, French, Dutch and Courlander colonists many times. Africans were also brought to the islands. The citizens have a wide variety of ancestors.[1]
Coverage and Compliance[edit | edit source]
Civil registration in Trinidad began in 1848. It began in Tobago in 1868. Prior to those dates the religious institutions would have recorded baptisms, marriages, and deaths.
