In 1973, West Lothian was made a district of Lothian region and

lost the burgh of Bo'ness and the district of Bo'ness to Falkirk district of Central Region.
lost the burgh of Queensferry and the district of Kirkliston and part of Winchburgh to Edinburgh district of Lothian Region.
gained East Calder and West Calder districts from Midlothian.

In 1994, the district of West Lothian was made into a unitary council area named West Lothian Council.^[1]

At ScotlandsPeople one can search the indexes and obtain a digital copy of the record for a small fee within minutes. However, sometimes additional help is available from local registrars. For example, proof of death and close family relationship can make more recent records available that would otherwise be restricted by privacy laws.
